Share a Meal
Over 20 years ago, a team of folks from First Presbyterian Church began a Saturday feeding program, to help our poor and homeless neighbors when the local soup kitchen at Jubilee Ministries was closed. Each Saturday, volunteers would put out a hot meal on an open field that was part of our church campus, and have a picnic for our neighbors in need.
Over the years, that ministry evolved into Share A Meal, a feeding program supported by local Christian, Jewish and even Hindu congregations that provide meals for the poor in Hollywood each Saturday and Sunday. As the church that first pioneered this weekend feeding ministry, First Presbyterian continues to take one Saturday a month to prepare sandwiches and other items to feel the hungry of Hollywood.
Around 11 AM on the first Saturday of the month, a team of volunteers gather in our church kitchen to prepare the food, and then bring it to the cafeteria of the Broward Outreach Center, which has become the ministry that hosts these weekend meals. But these meals mean more than simply food to those who come. They remind them that they are not alone in their struggles; that their neighbors care, including their neighbors at First Presbyterian Church. And it reminds us that as Jesus said, in as much as we feed these our brothers and sisters, we are feeding Jesus. And so everyone is touched by this ministry that we do together, both those who serve and those who are served.
Everyone is welcome to come on the first Saturday, and be part of this very special ministry of hospitality to the hungry of Hollywood. So come on out, and help feed others. You will find that doing so feeds something deep in you as well.
